Who We Are

Somali Civil Society Alliance for scaling up nutrition (SCSA-SUN)SCSA-SUN was founded in 2019 in Somalia as a movement of Somali Civil Society Organizations alliance as the result of the needs for a multi-stakeholder response to addressing the nutrition challenge in Somalia through the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement and as well to raise the nutrition agenda on the national development plan of the federal government of Somalia.

This civil society platform will work to reinforce the efforts by civil society organizations (CSOs), community based organizations and UN agencies to advocate for nutrition issues and support the government to improve nutrition and health outcomes for children and women. It is a part of the Global Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) movement founded on the principle that all people have the right to food and good nutrition.

Since its establishment, 20 organization became members including local CSOs and business companies, making this consortium the most influential civil society organizations working in Somalia. The consortium will encourage more nutrition stakeholders particularly local organizations and civil societies across the country to join with this alliance for collective action for promotion of healthy & wellnourished nation.

SCSA-SUN will make use of various media platforms including local radio and television, social media with key stakeholders including parliamentarians and communities and will participates´ in global conferences to highlight the key issues of addressing of widely malnutrition situation of the country The Somalia Civil Society Alliance-Scaling up nutrition SCSA-SUN will be a key advocate for Nutrition in Somalia to influence policy makers in Somalia and with over 200 registered local NGOs and partners (even at the grassroots level) spread across the six Geo-political zones of the country.

Our mission is to unite dedicated Somali civil society organizations whose aim is to bring together different stakeholdersengaged in nutrition improvement (government institutions, civil society, COs and local NGOs, business and scientists)to achieve where every women, child and family member has sufficient nutrition to live a healthy and active live

Our Vision

Our vision is to achieve a Somalia where every mother and child is assured of sufficient nutrition. To increase coverage of effective and integrated nutrition programmes by ensuring political commitment to tackle malnutrition, increasing financial resources and ensuring accountability by the government.

Our Short-term Objectives

  • Enhance the understanding of importance of community knowledge in development
  • Network and collaborate with different organizations UN agencies, INGOs, LNGOs and Universities
  • Scale up the nutrition of the communities
  • Train the communities in basic nutrition and health skills
  • Raise community awareness on nutrition improvement
  • Involve the communities the national health policies
  • Strengthen the public and community sectors towards the promotion of nutrition an d health at grass level
  • Promote local knowledge to improve protection issues including child protection and GBV

Our Long-Term Objectives

  • To advocate for effective coordination of all nutrition stakeholders and programmes in Somalia
  • To create a platform through which Civil Society Organizations can effectively advocate for improved nutrition in Somalia
  • To advocate and engage government to create nutrition budget lines in some key Federal and state Ministries in Somalia as well as include CSOs in nutrition interventions as appropriate
  • To encourage and strongly advocate for the establishment of an effective and functional nutrition surveillance monitoring and evaluation systems
  • To build the capacity of consortium members (SCSA-SUNmembers) to effectively engage in the pursuit of improved nutrition in Somalia

Our Mandate

SUN-SCSA organization in Somalia has a mandate to mobilize and develop the capacity of civil societies; inform the general public on food and nutrition matters and hold the government accountable. The SCSA in Somalia is part of the global SUN movement and works to empower the youth and women at community level on demand for protective foods.
